Knit for possibly the most charming baby I’ve yet to meet in person.
The pattern itself is pretty simple, but it does get fiddly towards the end.
sl2-k1-psso = slip 2 stitches as if knitting 2tog, knit 1 stitch, pass the 2 slipped stitches over.
Kfb = Knit into the front and back of the
Cast on 138 stitches. Divide onto 3 dpn or 1 circular and join, being careful not to twist.
Knit in 3×3 ribbing placing stitch markers every 23 stitches, for about 2cm.
R1 [Kf&b, knit 9, sl2-k1-psso, k9, kf&b] 6 times
R2 knit 1 row plain (stocking stitch).
Repeat these two rows 5 times (ten rows total).
MAIN PATTERN STAGE: Here, the second half of each pattern repeat decreases the number of stitches
R1 [kf&b, k9, sl2-k1-psso, k9, kf&b, sm, k10, sl2-k1-psso, k10, sm] 3 times
R2 and all even rows: knit one row plain
R3 [kf&b, k9, sl2-k1-psso, k9, kf&b, k9 sl2-k1-psso, k9] 3 times
R5 [kf&b, k9, sl2-k1-psso, k9, kf&b, k8, sl2-k1-psso, k8, sm] 3 times
R7 [kf&b, k9, sl2-k1-psso, k9, kf&b, k7, sl2-k1-psso, k7, sm] 3 times
R9 [kf&b, k9, sl2-k1-psso, k9, kf&b, k6, sl2-k1-psso, k6, sm] 3 times
Etc. until you’re down to
R19 [kf&b, k9, sl2-k1-psso, k9, kf&b, sm, k1, sl2-k1-psso, k1, sm] 3 times
R21 [kf&b, k9, sl2-k1-psso, k9, kf&b, sm, sl2-k1-psso, sm] 3 times
FIDDLY PATTERN STAGE:
From now, you’ll have to be taking stitches for the 2nd sl2-k1-psso, from the first part—while still keeping the kf&b
R23 [k1, kf&b, k8, sl2-k1-psso, k8, kf&b, sl2-k1-psso,] 3 times- you may have to pull a stitch from R24 for your last sl2-k1-psso,
R25 [k1 IF NECESSARY, kf&b, k7, sl2-k1-psso, k7, kf&b, sl2-k1-psso] 3 times.
Keep going for as long as you can, until you’re at
RX: kf&b, sl2-k1-psso, kf&b, sl2-k1-psso.
Knit one row plain, then
K1, sl2-k1-psso 12 times , break the yarn and thread it through the remaining stitches, drawing it close to knot in.
This number of stitches and this yarn fit a 6-9 month old. It’s easy to futz with the pattern by CO more or less, so long as you do so in 12s. You just have 1 less stitch between each Kf&B and sl2-k1-psso
So for smaller, CO 126 and the pattern stage looks like this:
R1 [kf&b, k8, sl2-k1-psso, k8] 6 times
And the Fiddly Pattern Stage looks like:
R5 [kf&b, k8, sl2-k1-psso, k8, kf&b, k7, sl2-k1-psso, k7, sm] 3 times.
Same for making it bigger—you just add 12 stitches when you cast on and knit [kf&b, k10, sl2-k1-psso, k10, kf&b].
Easy– and very easy to scale up for older kids or adults.
Please let me know if you have any questions about that pattern or run across any problems knitting it up– just because the instructions make sense in my head, doesn’t mean they make sense on screen!
